The five interlaced rings displayed during the opening ceremo - nies at the Olympic Games is a respected emblem of the Olympic movement. Ranging from blue, black, red, yellow and green, the rings are featured on the center of a white flag and serve as an official symbol. Designed in 1912 by Frenchman Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the father of the modern Olympic Games, the meaning of the rings suggest unity-nations of athletes assembling from the five parts of the world in which the Olympic movement was active at the time.
Coubertin, the founding member and former president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), intended the inter - locking design to have universal significance. He was supposedly inspired by five interlocked rings he saw on an ancient altar in Delphi, Greece. The color of each ring, however, is not associated with a specific continent. Each color was selected because it existed on all the flags of every participating nation.
